Bridging the Silence: Mainpuri Empowers Teachers with Sign Language Training via PRASHAST App

An inclusive education initiative aiming to train general teachers, Shikshamitras, and Instructors to ensure every child with special needs finds a voice in the classroom.

In a significant stride toward fostering inclusive education, the Mainpuri district administration has launched a transformative initiative to empower general educators, Shikshamitras, and Instructors with sign language and specialized teaching techniques. Designed to reduce heavy reliance on dedicated special educators, this forward-looking program leverages technology through the government-mandated PRASHAST App, paving the way for a classroom environment where no child is left behind.

Addressing the Resource Gap in Inclusive Education

Currently, Mainpuri has 2,247 registered children with special needs (CWSN) enrolled across state-run schools. However, under the Integrated Education Program (Samekit Shiksha), the district relies on merely 27 special educators to cater to these students. This stark disparity has historically created immense hurdles in delivering customized instruction tailored to varied speech and hearing impairments.

To bridge this gap, the administration is decentralizing special instruction by equipping every mainstream educator with foundational sign language skills. By doing so, children with special needs will be able to learn seamlessly in their native, accessible communication modes directly from their primary classroom teachers.

Tech-Driven Empowerment: The PRASHAST Framework

Under the guidelines issued by the state government, downloading and registering on the PRASHAST App is now mandatory for all general teachers, Shikshamitras, and Instructors. The structured self-training framework operates as follows:

Self-Paced Mobile Learning: Educators must download 10 designated instructional modules and video guides directly onto their mobile phones.

Pedagogical Adaptation: The video series covers essential sign language gestures, adaptive teaching techniques, and practical communication methodologies tailored for children with disabilities.

Direct Implementation: Upon completing the self-training modules, teachers will directly apply these skills within their daily classroom routines.

Strict Timeline: The district has set a firm deadline of September 30 for all educators to complete their app-based training.

Mobilization and Operational Roadmap

The rollout strategy was formally detailed during a briefing led by District Coordinator Randhir Bahadur Singh at the Integrated Education Office, located within the Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) office premises in Mainpuri. Addressing key educators, Singh emphasized that true inclusion can only occur when every teacher understands the unique language of every student.

The meeting saw active participation from special educators including Mohammad Masood Ali, Rekha Singh, Vivek Yadav, Veena Tripathi, Vimal Kumar, and Ompal Arya, all of whom are assisting in monitoring teacher progress across the district's blocks.

By transforming regular classrooms into inclusive spaces through digital technology, Mainpuri is setting a scalable benchmark for accessible, empathetic, and equitable primary education across Uttar Pradesh.
